• [OT] Appointment of Muslim as head of Human Rights Commission on hold

From Rhino@21:1/5 to All on Thu Aug 8 10:37:03 2024
Today was supposed to be the first day on the job for Birju Dattani,
who had been named to the post of head of the (federal) Human Rights Commission. However, rather than showing him his new office, the Justice Minister, Arif Virani, has put him on leave to consider the results of
the investigation made into Dattani. I'm not an expert in "government
speak" but I *think* that means Dattani has been told that the inquiry
found some very disturbing things in his past and that he would be well
advised to decline to take the position.

Dattani apparently said a number of anti-Semitic things in his past, as detailed in the article.

Then again, from the wording of the article, the Minister hasn't yet
decided to go ahead with the appointment and is stalling for time while
he considers the results of the inquiry. This may just be his way of
waiting for public attention to be focused elsewhere before he makes a
quiet announcement that, after due consideration, he's decided Dattani
is a fit candidate after all and welcomes him to the job.
