• Hardware?

From Amessyroom to All on Sat Jul 13 15:09:17 2024
So does Sun/Oracle even have any hardware products anymore ? The last product I supported was the supercluster and they sunset it while we had two active users of a total of four clusters.

Seems everything is in the cloud, haven't heard of anybody purchasing or leasing any Sun/Oracle hardware for years.

    Curiously.

The following seem to be current shipping products:

    - Oracle SPARC M8-8
    - Oracle SPARC T8 & S7
    - Oracle Fujitsu SPARC

Aside: I find it interesting that the page that OrangeFish linked to
    includes an Fujitsu product.

Seems everything is in the cloud, haven't heard of anybody purchasing
or leasing any Sun/Oracle hardware for years.

My team is exploring purchasing multiple S7s as replacements for aging
    T4 and T7 systems.

Are you asking why we're still using SPARC?

Because we are paid to host legacy Solaris SPARC applications for
clients. -- Solaris on SPARC is the sole purpose of the business unit.

Most of the clients are running various versions of a given application.

Most of the clients have stopped paying software support to the vendor
for various reasons. Many found support elsewhere. Some didn't want to upgrade and stopped paying for new versions.

The application vendor does have a Linux / x86_64 option. BUT the
vendor requires that all previous years of missing support be paid to
get to current. They won't just license the new version.

So it's more economical for most of our clients to stick with what they
    have.

Thus we have a reasonable client base that brings in a reasonable income.

So we stick with Solaris on SPARC for the foreseeable future.

Here's some more webpages I found via cross checking with the current
    systems handbook:

    <URL:https://www.oracle.com/engineered-systems/>
Includes links to the database and private cloud appliances running
    Unbreakable Linux.

    <URL:https://www.oracle.com/storage/>
    Includes the Fishworks ZFS appliances.

I stand corrected, but I guess my comment was kinda due to the lack of traffic in group. And since I left supporting Solaris a few years back, have not heard or seen much discussion of products. Just push for use of Oracle Cloud.

The last system I supported was M8 supercluster. So glad they are still thriving. Was talking to a DBA I use to support, and he was telling me that it is still working great -- and hopes it can last 4 more years, until his retirement. LOL

    - Oracle SPARC M8-8
    - Oracle SPARC T8 & S7
    - Oracle Fujitsu SPARC

These were the last machines I saw from Oracle. So I guess no new products :-(

The M8 is awesome as was their supercluster. I had two customers using SC. Then they sunset (I think the T7 version); was disappointed in Oracle.

Thanks for sharing what is current. I loved supporting these machines.

Larry Ellison has always preferred discussion of his products and
services on his forums and with his sales critters.

The X10 Cloud and Database Appliances GA'd in 2023 but I don't recall
receiving any marketing material for them.

I suspect but don't know that your DBA will be able to continue to
purchase support for all of the currently sold Solaris-based systems
til Solaris EOL in 2037. <URL:https://www.oracle.com/us/support/library/lifetime-support-hardware-301321.pdf>

What are Ellison's minions quoting for lifetime support for the 2017
    GA systems?
