• random*.msg (segfault)

From kk4qbn@1:103/705 to Digital Man on Mon Aug 26 09:31:46 2024
    Hi Rob,

Here is a strange one for you. I was doing some cleaning/updating of my text directory. I have a total of 30 or so random*.msg files (in sync CTRLA format)
and I moved them to "/sbbs/text/menu/random" directory which this may have caused it in the firstplace, did'nt think about that. but anyway, I moved them to this directory temporarily just to make it easier to navigate my txt files and update them in SyncDraw, I logged into the BBS with the files still in the ../text/menu/random directory and it segfaulted the bbs in the login sequence right when it is time to load the random* files. So I presume it is loading a that directory as a file and crashing.

I'm sure it's something that will not happen ever again with anyone else, but thought you should know :-)

Interesting. Did any of the files that were moved have any of the native filenames for a new installation of the BBS?

I can't think of the names to provide as examples, and I have no access to my system at the moment.

I'll try to reproduce it some time. A bug (issue) report at gitlab.synchro.net would help me to remember to do that.

Also, anytime SBBS segfaults (assuming *nix OS), it'd be very helpful (likely save me a lot of time) if you could provide a backtrace of the crash:

no.. the ../sbbs/text/random*.* files would be ones you add afterwards to have different ansis shown at random at login.

Next time I update I'll compile it in debug mode and fire sbbs up with gdb and try to reproduce it again if it hasnt been by then. I'll go ahead and report an issue at gitlab, I've copied all the files back to the text/menu directory and of course it works correctly now. even though I did'nt delete the directory.

    anyway, Thanks :-)

I was able to reproduce this very easily and I have updated the git report with a backtrace.
